Washing Up on Shore
WOSSH, WASSH, WISSH! These are the sounds I think of when I remember the winter break of ’09.
I was walking on the tan, sandy beach on a warm, winter December day in Cabo San Lucas , Mexico . I was spending Christmas there in Mexico .
It was an amazing day, a day to be with family. Luckily I was with my aunt, my mom, and my dad. My brother and sister were at the Kid’s Club, so it was just us for the day. We had nothing but excitement. We buried my aunt in the sand and made her into a mermaid. And we had ice cream with sprinkles. Later that afternoon my dad asked me to come in the water with him and I said that I would.
We went in the water with nothing but small waves. They looked like they were about 1 foot tall. Then we turned around and we saw a wave that was as high as a one story house, I mean it was huge. I swear if I had run out of the water onto the beach then I would have been safe, but then again I wouldn’t be telling this story. Anyways my dad and I held hands, closed our eyes and dived as the wave washed over us. I was broken apart from my dad’s hand and thrown around like a rag doll in the water. I felt scared and nervous if I was ever going to see my family again.
When my eyes opened my dad was coming out of the water as my mom and aunt came running to my side with a towel and a hand. My dad walked up to me with a frightened look on his face. I could barely hear his voice because of the water in my ears but I could make out, “Are you okay?” I nodded as my mom got me some water. I couldn’t believe what just happened. If the wave didn’t wash me on shore then I would have drowned. Scared to death I decided to just relax from the horrible experience. My dad got me a wrap up because he thought I was cold, and a necklace because he thought I was sad and needed some cheering up.

Later that day the waves were smaller and softer so my dad asked me to go in. I wanted to be brave but I was still a little bit scared from what had happened earlier. I went in anyways, but this time my dad and I were smart and got out before any big waves got a chance to hit us.
That vacation was very relaxing after the horror that had struck me. I learned a lot that day about common sense and safety, especially when you’re in the water. I learned that if you’re in the water and a big wave comes then you should try and leave before it hits you, because you never know how strong a wave can be.
