Ancient Roman Civilization

Food
Romans had breakfast they ate, bread with honey, oats with grains, and watered down wine. For their second meal they would have bread with cheese, dates, fruits, and occasionally some meat the servants start to bring out the food to the tables. On the menu they would serve… appetizers, the main course, and dessert. Each dish consists several of the meals. The Romans ate tons of vegetables such as olives, asparagus, mushrooms, beans, and broccoli. The meat they ate where fish, lobster, oysters, eggs, poultry, and pork but they rarely ate beef. The Romans liked to put sauces on their food. Their favorite sauce was garum. Garum was a special sauce made of fish, salt, and herbs.  At parties they cooked boiled ostriches, roasted flamingos, stuffed dormice sprinkled with honey and topped with poppy seeds.  Back then they didn’t have forks and knives. They only had spoons but mostly ate with their hands.

Curing  The Ill
The Romans didn’t understand the way of curing the ill properly. Romans believed that the illness was caused by witchcraft, curses, and the gods. The Romans went to doctors but it was very expensive and some doctors were even frauds. Even professionals couldn’t  cure everyone.
\
Arches and Concrete
The Romans were great builders. Almost all the structures that are built today were designed by the Romans. The Romans made arches all the time.  An arch is a curved structure that holds tons of weight.  Arches helped Roman architects because they could build large structures called aqueducts.  Aqueducts brought water to the hills to get to the city of Rome.

 Clothing
Roman men wore complicated clothing they wore Knee length tunics, with short sleeves. Roman citizens wore a toga over their tunics. A tunic is like a long sheet that they would wear around their bodies. Women wore longer tunics around their bodies with a shorter tunic on top. This was called a palla. Palla is another cloak that goes on top of all the rest of the sheets and it goes over the shoulder and under the arm.

Concrete and Arches
Romans invented concrete. It is made of lime and water. A roman builder would make a mushy paste then he would add volcanic sand and pebbles. They would stir the mixture hard and they would have to be very strong. After that the mixture would be a big messy blob, and you could make it into any shape you wanted. After then it would dry and never be soft again. Even in the rain it doesn’t get mushy or ruined.

Worship and Sacrifice
The Romans feared the gods. They would always ask for help. People would pray and make offerings at the temples and would return the favor later on. Offerings came in different shapes and sizes, from coins and brooches left by the poor and silver statues donated by the rich. People also donated food and drinks, and then they would burn incense at altars. Animal sacrifices were common, ranging from a single bird to a sack of cattle. They always relied on the gods to solve all their problems.

Winter Activities

There are many ways to spend your wonderful white winter. Instead of sitting around all day, why not grab a coat, a pair of gloves or mittens, warm pants, a hat, and a scarf, and go have a great time in the snow.  When I put on my snow gear and head outside, I like to arrange a snowball fight in my neighborhood, make a snowman with my sister, and jump in the car with my family and head to Vermont for some skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating.
Have you ever considered going outside and arranging a snowball fight with your friends, neighbors, siblings, or parents? Well if you have not, I recommend trying it. It is a great activity to do when it is snowing or has snowed. Last year when it snowed I gathered up a bunch of my friends, and we made 100 snowballs. When my sister walked out of the door all of my friends chucked snowballs at her at the same time she looked like a huge snowball after we were done throwing all of the snowballs. You can end your day by sitting around a burning warm fire.
Making a snowman is also a fun activity to do when there is the right type of snow on the ground. If you want to make a big snowman it might take a long time to roll the snowball and make it gigantic for the snowman, but it is still a fun activity to do in the winter. One time I made a big snowman family. They all had long carrot noses and little blueberry eyes. In the family there was one dad, one mom, a sister, and a brother just like my family.
Never forget about skiing or snow boarding! They are both an exhilarating, exciting, and excellent way to spend your frosty day. One of my friends is the fourth best skier in the United States of America for his age and I bet if you practice a bunch you could get as good as him. Going down the slopes is an awesome way to keep warm and stay active. So if you are ever having trouble deciding what to do over a weekend or a few days off of school, try going to a ski resort and hitting the slopes!
Going ice skating is the perfect activity to do on a cold day. Gratefully gliding on a rink of ice is a great way to spend time with your family. If you could find time out of a winter day and find a rink around your house. Try going ice skating sometime I think you will like it.
If you are looking to spend your day inside, I suggest making a ginger bread house. Making a ginger bread house is a great activity because you get to design the ginger bread house however your heart desires. It is a super fun way to spend your day. Many people adore candy, and when you make a ginger bread house you can decorate the ginger bread house with as much candy decor as you prefer.
These are some terrific winter activities that you can consider doing on your free time.

     My First Knicks Game
 with My Dad

I jumped up in the air ready to explode in excitement when I saw my dad’s car pull up in the driveway; even though I knew he would be home from work early I was still excited because I finally get my dad to myself since my baby brother is getting all the attention. I sprinted outside and dove into the car screaming “I can’t wait”. We were driving in the car for a pretty long time. I was starting to get bored after a little bit. I started looking outside it was kind of fascinating I saw lots of buildings and cool things. We were driving on really busy streets it was still kind of boring but I knew it was worth it so I sat quietly with my dad. After a little while we slowed down right then I knew we were close.
I saw huge billboards, huge TV screens, and crowds of people walking into the big stadium. There were also lots of loud noises like busses, trucks, honking, people talking, and commercials from the TV’S I was mesmerized. I was looking around like I was in heaven.
Soon we parked the car and started walking towards the stadium
As soon as we stepped into the stadium there was an ally with big lights big TV’s with highlights of previous knicks games and pictures of knicks players like Carmelo Anthony and A’ mare Stoudimire and more.
At the end of the ally there were tall muscular men that were checking bags and tickets I saw lots and lots of people. When it was our turn my dad handed the men our tickets he checked them and then he told us to keep going.
We went up a ramp a few stairs I was smiling the whole way up. I saw soda carts, restaurants and, carts with different types of drinks. My dad bought refreshment then we went to take our seats.
I was confused because I only saw the Magic players warming up and not the knicks.
Then all the lights went of a bunch of little lights took over and on the loudspeaker I heard…
AND NOW INTRODUCING YOUR NEW YORK KNI–I-I-I-I-I-I-I-ICKS!
I saw all the players march out of the locker room in a strait line waving and smiling to the fans I got even more exited after they marched out I heard on the loudspeaker again…
NOW SINGING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM --------------- -----------!
All the players were looking down listening to the anthem. The person sitting next to me was being extremely rude he was always interrupting the guy that was singing. He was screaming at the top of his lungs saying lets go knicks (I don’t really disagree with the part with the knicks but it was still rude and disrespectful). When the song was done I heard NOW GIVE IT UP FOR YOUR KNICKS CITY DANNNNCEEEERS!!!!!!!
Lots of women came onto the court they did all sorts of dances. They were great
When they were done I heard NOW THE MOMENT YOUVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR THE NEW YORK KNICKS V.S THE ORLANDO MAGIC I screamed at the top off my lungs FINALLY! MY DAD laughed then whole stadium went wild my dad and I covered our ears. The players were getting in their positions I felt like I was about to explode.
The REF. through the ball in the air sadly the knicks lost the tip-off the game was really close after a little while my dad and I got hungry so we went to one of the shops and bought pizza and fries.
When we were walking back to our seats we sat back down. The knicks scored a 3 pointer and the magic quickly called a time out we both went yes as if we sucked the words out of each others brain.
After a little bit more playing time the buzzer rang and soon enough it was half time.
The knicks were down by 4 at half-time. at half-time there were lots of little contests one of them was little kids dunking on small hoops my dad and I wanted the second contestant to win half-time did not last for long right when the game was back in action we were both pumped and excited we watched the game in excitement as we stuck handful after handful of popcorn in our mouths as the knicks slowly pulled away with the lead my dad and I looked at each other smiling every time the knicks would score.   After a little while the fourth quarter started and the knicks were up by 8. no one could stop them. Towards the end Dwight Howard took over and the magic snatched the lead from the knicks the smiles on our faces dropped immediately.  but we knew the knicks were not giving up they came right back to the Magic Carmelo had the ball he drove to the hoop and got fouled by Dwight Howard and that was his sixth foul so Dwight Howard got fouled out of the game all around me I heard the fans screaming get out of here and it’s about time my dad and I quickly caught on after some more scoring the knicks were up by 3 with 10 seconds remaining the crowd was on their tippy-toes in the game the magic quickly in bounded it to Jason Richardson he shot from really far away...
Swisshhhhh!!!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
The crowd started booing like crazy every one was angry except for a few magic fans
I was ready to jump in the air and say come on it should not count or you guys stink. My face was red my dad told me to sit down because they were going to go to over time and it would be really exiting while I was thinking that the knicks should’ve won
The game went into over time on the big screen I heard ARE YOU READY!!!!!!!
MAKE SOME NOISE I was sad but still exited I felt like my ears were about to explode
The knicks won the tip of because Dwight Howard was out cause of his fouls
The knicks gave the ball to Carmelo Anthony he dribbled through a few people and...
SLAM DUNK
My dad and I made a big whooooo
Carmelo Anthony was on fire the whole time and in the end the knicks won113-108 it was a real close game but the team I wanted to win won
After the game we went down to the gift shop I even got a Carmelo Anthony jersey it was awesome.
And after that my dad even took us for ice cream at Dylan's candy bar
I got two scoops of cookies and cream it was really good it had dripping chocolate and crunchies I gulped down my ice cream it was so good!
It was late and both of us were tired soon we both finished our ice creams and drove home in the dark city the ride home was really quiet it was weird especially because we were in New York City I couldn’t really see any thing it was too dark and late. when we arrived at home my mom came out and was asking us how was the game and who won I didn’t really want to answer cause I was so tired “stop annoying me Mom” I said, it was about 12:00 I flopped on my bed like I was dead then my mom went in my room saying you have to brush your teeth I just gave her back a deep moan and went to bed.
This event was important to me because I had a great time with my dad I also had a great time at that event because I love the knicks and now I have experienced a life game. I also got to see my favorite player (Carmelo Anthony) score 39 points.

The Bronx Zoo with my Grandparents

I will never forget the time my grandparents took my sister and me to the Bronx Zoo. I was in first grade and this was over April break. My Grandma and Grandpa took me and my sister Maggie to New York City to the Bronx Zoo. In the City it was a gray and gloomy day. We were in luck because it was not raining… yet.
When we walked into the zoo it was super crowded for such a gloomy day. The first place we went was the birdhouse. It was just me, my Grandpa and Maggie. My Grandma did not go in because she despises any type of bird or snake. When we entered the birdhouse it was like a jungle. It smelled tropical, and definitely the birds had a smell to them. There was a rainbow parrot in a cheerful cage that would not be quiet. So at perfect timing my sister said my name right in front of the bird. Then it said, “HI NICKY, HI NICKY, HI NICKY.” It got so irritating that we decided to leave immediately.
We walked around the zoo and saw the outside exhibits. We saw the chimpanzees and the monkeys. My family has this weird thing about monkeys that we are all obsessed with them. In less than two minutes it started pouring rain. It was like the sky had started hysterically crying, like a mini Niagara Falls! The poor animals were getting poured on. I could see their faces coming down like when you’re really sad about something. The streets were flooding, everybody was sopping wet. It was a disaster!  There was absolutely no dry shelters accept for the snake house.
At this point my grandma would rather do anything but go in the snake house. I thought of it as a danger zone because I was scared of poisonous animals. When we entered the danger zone there was rattling everywhere. It was like an evil scientist’s lair. There were poisonous venoms everywhere. It was very scary. It smelled like if someone had just thrown up garbage. It was the most repulsive thing I’ve ever inhaled. It was like second hand smoke that could possibly kill you. Accept we wouldn’t die we would throw up.. After twenty minutes of pure torture we had to leave because we couldn’t stand it anymore.
My grandparents told us that they would buy us new clothes from the Bronx Zoo gift shop. So off we went to the other dry resource that somehow we didn’t think of going to before the whole scene in the snake house. We entered the DRY little hut. This place was so crowded it would have been almost impossible to find our sizes. Rack after rack we looked when finally we found our sizes. We waited in this huge line to change into our new clothes. At last we were dry and warm.
We ran to the car and jumped in. I felt a little bad because only Maggie and I were dry. The car ride home was full of laughs and funny conversations. It was hard for my Grandpa to drive because you couldn’t see out the window.  Lots of people pulled aside because they couldn’t drive with all the fog and rain. It was kind of scary because the highway was really slippery.
When we got to my house my mom and dad were so astounded that my grandparents were sopping and that we were not. We told them our whole adventure, and it contained every little detail that happened that day. When we told the story my parent’s faces were like in a movie when you go “ooohhh” and “ahhhh.” They did not think we had had fun at all. But to tell you the truth it was one of the most fun days I have had so far in my life and I will never forget the day with my grandparents. Hopefully, that will be my last trip to the Bronx Zoo when it’s raining.

But then the heat dies, the land is soon calm
There are blue skies, near vegetation is now gone

LAST SHOT PRAYER

It was   Saturday and sunny morning at Saugatuck elementary school. My basketball team was playing duke. Our coach got us to lay up lines as we do before every game of the season right handed lay ups then left handed lay-ups. Next our coach gave us the starting lineup. Point guard Jake, Shooting guard Sam, small forward Tyler, power forward Matt, and center Ron we walked to center court ready for the jump ball. The game began.

It was a really close game at the end of the 1st quarter. The score was 11 to 10. We were wining by one point.  It was another competitive quarter the score was 23 to 21. Duke was ahead at halftime. Coach Gabe Levitt gave us a good pep talk that got us motivated and pumped up for the third for the 3rd quarter.

We had a strong 16 point quarter draining every shot we took from lay-ups to 20 foot jumpers they had 13points.the score was 36 to 37.We were wining. We were exhausted on the bench from playing an amazing quarter. Coach Gabe said we had an amazing 3rd quarter but is not over till it’s over anything can happen so In that case we had to keep the lead. The clock started ticking again tick. They kept on making every shot they took. We were now losing by 2 points with 20 seconds left in the game. A player on Duke dribbled down the court with 10 seconds left and he CARRIED THE BASKETBALL!!! We got the ball back. We got down the court and Miles got fouled so we got 1 point automatically because if there is a shooting foul you get 1 point. Now we are down 1 point with 6.7 seconds left on the clock I took one last glance at the shot clock and then caught the inbound pass from Sam I dribble past one player circle the basket I hear people yelling shot I was so nervous as I turned around and throw up a fade away jumper, just like Dirk on the Dallas Mavericks, the crowd goes silent as the ball was so high and SWISH it went in!!! WE WIN WE WIN! YES YES!!!!!! When that happened I was thinking I was Dirk on the Dallas Mavericks who never misses.
A shot from lay-ups to 26 foot jumpers.

I was so happy my heart stopped beating I ran to the other side of the court, tears and sweat were dripping down my face I could not believe what just happened. My mom and dad said to me that they were extremely proud of me and my team my team was too.

After the game the referee said great shot best one season right Jake, yes totally the best shot of the season I replied as was walking back to my car. That was the best game I had ever played in my life my final stats were 9 for 17with a final of 21 points 11 rebounds and 7 assist by far the best game I have ever played. I will never forget that moment the first buzzer beater I have ever hit in my whole entire life. The motions that were going threw me was the best feeling of my life and the.  Scariest feeling of my life.

That was the happiest moment of my life especially one that I will never ever forget and nether will my parents.

Pitching A No Hitter

It was a bright and sunny day. There were no clouds in the sky. The baseball field was perfect to play on. You couldn’t ask for a better day at Camp Starlight for baseball.

It was Olympics. The summer of 2010. I was on the blue team. The other team was white. I was ridiculously nervous and excited. It was because it was predicted to be one of the closest games ever and I was the starting pitcher. I had a lot a pressure on me. We were also the home team. That means we are in the field first. And we get last licks at the end of the game if we are losing.

As the game got underway I grew less nervous. I felt really good. The first inning went by quickly and both teams went down 1-2-3. In the second I walked two people but then I struck out the next three. In the bottom of the second we got a runner at second base and I was up. The first pitch I swung at and CRACK! The ball met the bat and I hit a double to bring in a run and take the lead 1-0. The next batter hit a fly ball that was caught to end the inning.

In the third inning I lost my velocity and walked the bases loaded. Thankfully, I struck out the next 3 batters. I was still pitching a no-hitter. We went up to bat and hit very well. We had runners on first and second base with 2 outs. Spencer Weinoff one of our best players was up. He hit a triple and scored two runs for us to go up 3-0. But there was a lot of time left for them to come back. The next inning I struck out 2 batters and got the other one to fly out.

With 1 out I came up to bat with runners on first and second. The count quickly went to 3-2. Big pitch coming up. The pitcher heaved it in and it was about belt high. I swung and CRACK! A shot down the line. I was screaming “Go fair! “Go fair”. It was going to be close. But then, sadly I heard the umpire scream “Foul Ball”! “NO” I screamed. That would have probably won the game. The white team caught a big break. All of my teammates were shocked to because it looked like it was clearly going fair and there was no wind but it curved to a foul ball. I thought to myself that is in possible. I got ready for the next pitch and I heard my coach say “Come on Dylan you got this, just do what you did before but this time put the ball in play. I answered back “I will try”.

The pitcher got ready and threw it, the next pitch looked the same so I swung at it and once again... CRACK! This time, it was a no doubter. “FAIR BALL” screamed the umpire. I quickly rounded first, to second, to third, and I didn't stop until a HOMERUN! Were winning 6-0. I got jumped on like crazy. My coach called me over and said “I told you if you did the same thing you would hit in fair territory, awesome job”.

After I was up, we started to hit the ball.  A couple batters later Spencer Weinoff hit a grand slam! My homerun was totally forgotten but who cares. We were winning 10-0 and everyone thought it was going to be a close game. Nothing happened the rest of the inning and the rally ended. I pitched another 1-2-3 inning. My no-hitter was still in tack.

And then when we came up to bat, we got shut down 1-2-3. One more inning to get through and I will be pummeled by my teammates.
The first batter was Owen Baim my best friend from camp. He is good at most sports but baseball is not really his thing. But he isn’t even that bad at it. My First pitches were two strikes and one ball. My next pitch all I heard of what I’ve been hearing all day “Strike Three” screamed the umpire. “Yes” I screamed. 1 down two to go.

All pressure I felt in the beginning of the game was all inside me again. The next batter that came up to bat was a very short kid and crazy fast. His name is Ryan Kessler. He is good at every sport except hockey. The first pitch I threw was a ball. The second pitch he connected with and... CRACK! “No” I thought. I watched it fly but the outfielder was gaining on it. In my head I was saying “catch it “catch it”. And sure enough I watched the outfielder make one of the best catches I have ever seen in my life with full body extenuation. “Few” I said to my self loudly. That was so close. Now, just one more out to go.

Now the last batter I was facing was my best friend. His name was Zach Strober. He is one of the best hockey players I know. He is also pretty good baseball. On the very first pitch I gave him he popped it up. My put my hand up signaling it was for the infield. Spencer at shortstop called for it and caught it! Game Over! Finally, I had pitched a no hitter. All of my teammates ran towards me and jumped on me.  UNBELIEVIBLE! I was getting jumped on like crazy just like I predicted. I got lifted up on a counselors shoulder and got carried off the field. It was the best feeling I have ever had.

Jason and I

We had recently been dismissed from school and we had just started explaining the rules to our game “boys chase girls, girls chase boys” a very common game among us second graders.
“Okay,” my best friend Jason said in a leader like way “boys chase girls first!” All the girls ran like a cop to a doughnut factory in the public P.S.87 yard. The boys whose jobs were to chase after the girls did, while the boys, whose jobs were to hide, hid. (The boys like to win.)
After an about three hour chase with hurting legs, twisted ankles, and scraped knees It was hard to breathe. I felt like wanting to inhale my chap stick to grease up my lungs. After all those hours we caught all the girls except Grace. Grace was very agile, so she saved two girls. The sun was slowly going down, my vision became less clear.
Every one left but Jason, the girls, and me, it was the time of the big kids (the older kids always came in and reached havoc on all the smaller kids). A sixth grader with a buzz cut, coffee brown skin, and very round walked in. The taste of trouble in filled the air. His eyes watched the playground. His eyes like a tiger finding prey. His tiger eye looks on the main course, us.
“Leave them alone!” He bellowed eager to be a hero. To save someone, not make chaos.
“Okay, we were just playing a game, fatty!” Jason wined. The sixth grader ordered his gang to chase after us. My heart jumps. I look at Jason. He smiles, and then I was reassured.
“I ain’t fat are I?” He asked the right hand man while sucking in his gut.
“Well boss-“the sixth grader hit him on the head for giving the wrong answer. The right hand man rubbed his head. I was laughing at that point they could be in a sitcom. I was I thought it was fun, the chase because his gang was nerdy and slow.
The sixth graders right hand man had dirty blonde hair and he was tall and skinny and had snow cone from a Mr. Softies truck drip from his face (real intimidating). His boss tapped his shoulder and whispered in the right hand mans ear. He ran at me like a five-year-old finding presents under a Christmas tree. I wasn’t prepared so he got me. He held me, and then pushed me into his boss who grabbed me by the neck. I could not breathe, his B.O overwhelmed my nose. It smelled like garbage that dogs pooped in, and a skunk spayed puke, all that in his armpit. Eww!
“Hey idiot boy! I got the Simpson kid!” he yelled in a nasty voice. I tossed and turned. My heart started to burn with anger. I hated that name. Jason shot at him with anger, then jumped up and kicked him in the stomach. He fell with no sound trying to act cool. His face was telling otherwise.
            “The Simpson kid!” Jason teased.
“Shut up, idiot boy!” I said in a joke like way. We kept running. The right hand man ran after us. This time knowing his ability we split up. He swatted at Jason, but missed. He then punched and kicked like an elephant that saw a mouse. He captured Jason. At first I was too scared to get Jason back, but I remembered what he did for me. I spotted a bruise on his shin (I saw him get it while missing a kick to Jason) I kicked him in that spot. He let go of Jason and charged after me. Jason grabbed his leg and the big sixth grader fell giving me time to hide.
“Come out or I’ll hurt you!” he bellowed angrily. When he bent down to find me Jason jumped on his back. He falls, we run to my dad.
“Can we go?” we ask my dad who was sitting there and reading a book.
“Sure” he replies getting up from his book.
“I’ll get you later! And we’ll be back.” the right hand man said as we departed. It was a total bluff, I thought, but really I was scared, I swallowed a chunk of spit that wouldn’t go down, but Jason was by my side.
