Waiting for Dear Teo

My mom sister and I stepped into our light blue Subaru and buckled up for the 1 hour journey ahead of us. “Are you ready to go to Lucia and Pito’s baby shower?” My mom asked Seren and I. “Totally!” Seren and I answered excitingly. I was going to Lucia and Pito’s baby shower because we’re really good friend friends with each other and Lucia will soon give birth to my nephew, Teo. Lucia and Pito baby sited me every week day of the year. They make me feel like I’m part of their family and helped me start to gradually get past the time my dad died when I was only 2. We slowly backed out of the drive way and started driving to the baby shower at an apartment building in Brooklyn Heights where Pito’s mother lives. They’re having the party in the party room of the apartment building. Who knew there’d be one? I didn’t.
When we arrived I helped my mom unload the present that was in the trunk of the car for Lucia and Pito to help them with Teo’s first years of his life. I stayed close to my mom because I barely knew anybody at the party. Eventually I told my mom, “I’m going to go talk to Pito.” “I’ll come too!” My mom happily replied. We found Pito and talked for a little while about how excited we were about Teo. Pito was going to be Teo’s father and we’ve been best buds for a long time. He even taught me a little bit of baseball! Pito does stuff with me that my dad would’ve done with me like, taking me sledding on snow days, and playing family games together. He would do that with me to fill the hole in  my life I got when my dad died.
Soon after Pito, my mom, and I finished talking I found Lucia and we talked for a little bit about how Teo’s cute, little bedroom would look. Lucia is my sister’s best bud and will be Teo’s mother. Lucia became my baby sitter when I was 3 and Pito joined in when I was 3 and ½. Lucia watched me literally all the time to make sure that I was safe and always took my sister and I to the
5th avenue
street fairs.
Soon enough I had to go back home because it was already at night! I said my goodbyes to every one and hugged Lucia, Pito, and Teo,(The one who’s yet to be born.) I hopped into the Subaru with my mom and sister and we started driving back home.
“Did you have fun?” Mom asked my sister and I “How not?” the 2 of us answered. “I also can’t wait for Teo anymore.” I added. “Why?” My mom questioned me. “Because I know that he will change me.” I replied my mom understanding that I was serious about my comment. “Also Pito and Lucia filled the hole in my heart I got when dad died and I have to repay them. And helping them make Teo happy is how.”
It’s been A little more than 8 and ½ months since I found out about Teo and I’m getting anxious. Teo will mean almost every thing to me in the years of his life that I get to see because Teo will be my nephew and change me for sure. I know I can’t wait for Teo any longer and I don’t want to so I’m letting everything out. Lucia and Pito have meant almost everything to me since they became my baby sitters when I was 3. Every time the intercom beeps I hope it’s what I want it to say but every time I’m let down and I just feel disappointed. I hope that the next time the intercom beeps it will be for Teo and I and for a whole new link to life and family.

What to Count

I had a scary dream last night
That pulled me from my slumber
There were frightening things that happened
With Monsters, witches, lightning and thunder
I really regret what I did
Because I still haven’t fallen back to sleep
I shouldn’t have counted those monsters
Instead of counting sheep

Ancient Roman Civilization

Food
Romans had breakfast they ate, bread with honey, oats with grains, and watered down wine. For their second meal they would have bread with cheese, dates, fruits, and occasionally some meat the servants start to bring out the food to the tables. On the menu they would serve… appetizers, the main course, and dessert. Each dish consists several of the meals. The Romans ate tons of vegetables such as olives, asparagus, mushrooms, beans, and broccoli. The meat they ate where fish, lobster, oysters, eggs, poultry, and pork but they rarely ate beef. The Romans liked to put sauces on their food. Their favorite sauce was garum. Garum was a special sauce made of fish, salt, and herbs.  At parties they cooked boiled ostriches, roasted flamingos, stuffed dormice sprinkled with honey and topped with poppy seeds.  Back then they didn’t have forks and knives. They only had spoons but mostly ate with their hands.

Curing  The Ill
The Romans didn’t understand the way of curing the ill properly. Romans believed that the illness was caused by witchcraft, curses, and the gods. The Romans went to doctors but it was very expensive and some doctors were even frauds. Even professionals couldn’t  cure everyone.
\
Arches and Concrete
The Romans were great builders. Almost all the structures that are built today were designed by the Romans. The Romans made arches all the time.  An arch is a curved structure that holds tons of weight.  Arches helped Roman architects because they could build large structures called aqueducts.  Aqueducts brought water to the hills to get to the city of Rome.

 Clothing
Roman men wore complicated clothing they wore Knee length tunics, with short sleeves. Roman citizens wore a toga over their tunics. A tunic is like a long sheet that they would wear around their bodies. Women wore longer tunics around their bodies with a shorter tunic on top. This was called a palla. Palla is another cloak that goes on top of all the rest of the sheets and it goes over the shoulder and under the arm.

Concrete and Arches
Romans invented concrete. It is made of lime and water. A roman builder would make a mushy paste then he would add volcanic sand and pebbles. They would stir the mixture hard and they would have to be very strong. After that the mixture would be a big messy blob, and you could make it into any shape you wanted. After then it would dry and never be soft again. Even in the rain it doesn’t get mushy or ruined.

Worship and Sacrifice
The Romans feared the gods. They would always ask for help. People would pray and make offerings at the temples and would return the favor later on. Offerings came in different shapes and sizes, from coins and brooches left by the poor and silver statues donated by the rich. People also donated food and drinks, and then they would burn incense at altars. Animal sacrifices were common, ranging from a single bird to a sack of cattle. They always relied on the gods to solve all their problems.

The Barn Behind

The gray barn
Alone on the barren field
Waiting to be unlocked
Watching for the others
Stranded lost in gray
Looking up at the sky
Searching for the light
In the empty spaces
Where could they be?
Alone in the dark?
Wandering free
Unlike me
Somewhat alone
Except for the sky
The swift green fields and I
The soft wind blows
The wolves howl
The owls perch together you see
Unlike me
But where am I
Lost alone
Underneath its soft beige tone
The simple breeze
The dark gray sky
And plain old me
The barn behind

Ferrari

There is a Ferrari driving fast in the street
The roaring of the motor is very loud and free
The driver is rich and mean
He is shouting I am wild and free.

The color of the Ferrari is red
Is so beautiful I want to buy
One just like it

If you buy a Ferrari
I recommended
They are fast and they make
You feel cool.

Colors of the World

Magical colors flashing bright at me
Red, blue, pink, yellow and many more
In their majestic cups

It seems like a rainbow shining supreme
Colors are pictured in your own way
Nothing can keep those tints in a cup
You can use those shades in your mind for a painting

Paintings are your own imagination
You can think of them what you want
That is done by the colors you need
Colors will bring your imagination to life

You can build a story on a painting
A poem even
That will make you go wild

BOO!!

WHEN MY FRIENDS AND I WALKED
UP TO THAT SCARY HOUSE
IT FELT AS IF A GOBLIN OR A GHOST
WAS GOING TO POUNCE!

ALL THOSE JACK-O-LANTERNS
SITTING THERE BEING SPOOKY
SNEEKING THROUGH THAT SCARY HOUSE
MADE US ALL FEEL PUKEY

OUTSIDE THERE IS THUNDER AND LIGHTNING
NOT ONLY THAT BUT BIG THICK
COB WEBS ARE FRIGHTNING

AS THE TALL GRASS IN THE FRONT YARD SWAYS
INFRONT OF US IS WHERE A MUMMY LAYS

WRAPPED IN SOME WHITE CLOTH
I THINK IT’S BEING EATEN BY A MOTH

WALKING UP THOSE CREEKING STAIRS
IN THAT SCARY HOUSE
WHILE WE ALL FOLLOW A MOUSE

VAMPIRES AND BATS HIDE IN THE CORNER
AS WE STARE AT A SAD MOURNER

WHEN WE WALK INTO THAT DARK ROOM
THE DOOR SHUTS “BOOM!”

“BOO!”

“GOT YOU!”

Hope

Hope.
Such a tiny word.
So insignificant.
In our busy lives,
Do we ever really have time
To hope?
Have we become
Too realistic
Too mature?
For that small word,
A ray of sunshine
In a dismal grey sky.
Is there too much evil
For our dark thoughts
To ever be pierced
By hope?

I Am from…

I am from my Lego masterpieces hidden in my closet, my brother’s annoying army figures all over the floor, my family’s baseball gloves and my old chewed up soccer balls and dolls that I still play with.

I am from Sam’s giant chewed dog bones, dead grass in our backyard, a beat up play set, with cobwebs and a broken slide. I am from my long driveway, at the bottom of my street which no one can find, and a passage way through the woods to my friend’s house.

I am from my oma, always telling me stories from her life in Germany,  and coming to America, my nana; the great artist, always letting me using her old supplies, and my papa, always willing to tell a joke.

I am from “Pick your towel off the ground”, from my shower that night, “Be nice to your brother” when I trip over his Legos, and “Did you finish your milk?” after dinner.

I am from spicy chili, my favorite dish my mom makes, German stews, an old family recipe, and large salads every night.

I am from my lock box, with my wallets, my sock drawer with electronic goods, and a big drawer with boxes, toys, and old princess figures, which I’m sure nobody can find.

Where I am from....

I am from Wii and Xbox controllers scattered all over the living room to pictures of my family and friends all over the walls like a blanket of snow.

I am from lacrosse sticks and footballs strewn all over the yard to bounce backs and lacrosse goals, favorite sport.

I’m from busy
Jennings Court
filled with a lot of activity and plenty of kids. Pick-up games are my life and there is always someone to play with.  Riding bikes in the circle is perfect on a spring day.

I’m from holiday gatherings with my grandmother flying south to Florida is part of the Adipietro tradition.  I’m from trips to Garden City, Long Island for lacrosse games and Christmas, I never miss out on the double-presents.

I’m from, “Do your homework,” to “Be quiet, David,” It’s so hard to be quiet.  I am from, “Thank you for coming, and see you tomorrow.” My house door bell is always ringing.

I’ m from all the traditional delights, ham, turkey with all the trimmings.  I’m from Friday night pizza party movie night at my house. I usually get to pick the movie, sometimes my brother has a turn.  I just saw Happy Feet 2.

I’m from that random junk drawer that holds medals from my dad to pictures from long ago, and crystals that I got from a science trip with my family.

Watching a Baseball Game

Team’s up by one in the ninth,
But the pitcher’s in a jam.
Bases loaded, two outs,
And a full count on Lamb.

I stand up near the TV,
Waiting for some action.
I can’t take much more suspense,
From this intense attraction.

Finally the pitcher chooses a pitch,
After the catcher shows the sign.
And in case you haven’t noticed,
This game is on the line.

The pitcher throws a forkball,
I can’t wait to see the results.
After the pitch I say out loud,
“You just had to walk the tying run home didn’t you?”

Hunger Games

I want to read the Hunger Games
 I really really do!
My teacher Ms. Connolly says
no not in school.
It sounds amazingly cool
but I cant read it,
so I asked my parents they said fine but Ms. Connolly just keeps denying, request upon request
I just keep trying
I think I might be asking
until I’m dying.
