Swimming

My favorite spare time activity is swimming. I love the feel of the water when I dive in, the exhilaration as I battle my way to win a race, and the disbelief on my swimming competitors’ faces when I do win.
I really enjoy my swim practices. My swim coach, Betsy, pushes the whole swim team really hard, so we race like we mean it. Sometimes we get breaks and she gives us a Wacky Wednesday, which is when she makes swimming games out of games like Clue or Monopoly, and turns them into Wrat and Wratopoly, since our swim team is the Westport Water Wrats. We also get “wrat food” AKA M&M’s. We usually do at least one hundred laps each practice!! That may sound like a lot, but it isn’t for us. In a way, we’re all subhuman, because it’s amazing how much we do in a practice.
The meets are probably the best part of the swim team. It’s when all the swim teams in Connecticut come together in a swim team’s YMCA and compete to get good times. If you make a certain time, you go to New England’s, which is held at Harvard University! If you get a better time than New England’s, you go to Age Groups. Age Groups are better than New England’s, but instead it’s held in Westchester. Sadly, I didn’t make anything this year, sadly. If you get a certain time in Age Groups, you get to go to Zones in Florida, but it’s really hard to make Zones. I hope to make New England’s in my last swim meet before Short Course season starts.
There are two season in the swim team per year, Short Course and Long Course. Short Course season is from September to mid February. Long Course season is from April to mid June. Short Course season is in a 25 yard pool and Long Course season is in a 50 yard pool. Personally, I think Long Course is better than Short Course because Long Course is double the amount of laps as Short Course.
Those are the reasons why swimming is my favorite spare time activity. Swimming is like a second nature to me since I do it six times a week, not including meets. I know everybody on the Wrats loves swimming, but none of them like it as much as me!
