The Last Party
“Delphine, go with dad to get a cake.”
“Yes mom.” I was so exited. We were throwing a summer party with the neighborhood! I got in the car with my dad.
“Okay, we’re going to Great Cakes.” Yes! I love Great Cakes! I was overwhelmed with happiness. When we got to Great Cakes, I ran to all the delicious cakes. They all looked so good. I could smell their flavors in the air. I chose a blue and yellow cake because it reminded me of the beach. I tasted the frosting. Delicious. “Don’t do that.” My dad warned me.
When we got home all my neighbors were helping us set up for the party. I ran down to the kids.
“What did you bring?” I asked curiously.
“I brought a big waterslide!” Mark answered.
“We brought desserts and water balloons and water guns!” Dylan and Ethan beamed.
“I brought some baby pools. You know… for babies.” Leya looked at us.
“What?” I answered.
“Nothing” Leya muttered to herself.
We heard a squeal of joy. We turned around and, the babies Annabelle, Leya’s little sister Alex, Mark’s little sister and Morgan, Dylan and Ethan’s little sister were running at us with water guns.
“Run inside and get a water gun.” I yelled “This is war.”
Mark opened the door and let us in the house we locked the door behind us.
“Okay let’s get water guns.”
Everyone got a water gun.
“Okay let’s go to the waterslide. Those babies will never go there.”
We all charged to the waterslide. I felt relieved, everyone was getting along at the party that I had been waiting months for. We climbed to the top of the waterslide. They’ll never catch us here I thought. The babies started running. One of them must’ve stepped on the wire that fills up the waterslide with air because it started sinking. Uh oh I felt a pit feeling in my stomach. We’re going down. “We’re going to be fine Delphine. Remember when this happened at my house?” Mark asked.
“Oh, yeah.” I felt a sudden feeling of relief. We started giggling. This was fun, not scary. Well that was embarrassing. I blushed. We hit the ground softly in the heap of the waterslide. We got off, plugged it back in and used the top of the waterslide as our base. I guess we won the war when the little kids ran inside to watch Dora.
It started to get dark out. We caught fireflies and ate mores, our delicious invention. They are sort of like smores but they have caramel and whipped cream.
After the fireflies went away we went inside to watch our slide show. Why are we watching a slide show? Then it hit me. Dylan and Ethan were moving. How could I forget Dylan and Ethan! They’re moving tomorrow. That’s half the reason we had the party! NO NO NO! They can’t leave! A ball welled up in my throat. Tears stung my eyes. I can’t cry! Don’t cry! We are going to stay up late and have lots of fun! I stopped tearing up and watched the rest of the slide show.
We played our last game of glow and won! Glow is this game that we play in the dark. We take Nerf guns and flashlights and we try to shoot anyone who isn’t on our team.
We watched a movie.
When the movie was over we got our sleeping bags and went to our fort. We lay on our backs and got a wonderful view of the stars. “It really is too bad you’re moving tomorrow.” I told Dylan.
I fell asleep.
I woke up in the morning. Dylan was snoring softly. Dylan’s here. Maybe I was just dreaming about the whole party. I looked at my watch 4:00 am. “Dylan, Dylan wake up!” Dylan woke up.
“What time is it?” He asked.
“4:00 AM, but you’re moving tomorrow”
“Right,” he said sadly. We woke Mark and Ethan up.
“Let’s go to the baseball field,” Ethan suggested. We ran to the baseball field. When we got back, we ran to my house.
“Shh. My parents are sleeping. It’s . Let’s play rock band.” When we were done it was only half an hour until Dylan and Ethan leave.
“Hey let’s go say goodbye to our house.” Dylan suggested. We followed them up to the house.
“Dylan, Ethan I was looking all over for you!” Their mom exclaimed. “What time did you wake up we have to go on-.” “I can sleep on the plane mom.” Dylan said. We said goodbye to the house. We ran outside. But this time we were crying.
“Goodbye fort.” We managed to say between our sobs. All of our parents came outside.
“We’re going to miss our plane.” Dylan and Ethan’s mom said.
We slowly walked out to their car. Mark couldn’t go, he was too sad. They sat in their car. They buckled themselves up.
“This place is never going to be the same without you. Here take this.” I handed him a piece of paper.
“Your map of the island of disco thank you so much!” Disco was an island we made up when we were younger. I remember sitting in the car pretending to drive. Were going to disco!
Tears strolled down my cheeks. The car rolled out of the driveway. “Goodbye Westport !”
I do remember that day. Now I am looking at this story filled with happiness. I’m seeing Dylan and Ethan in two days!
